American War Ballads and Lyrics, Volume 2 (of 2)a Collection of the Songs and Ballads of the Colonial Wars, the Revolutions, the War of 1812-15, the War with Mexico and the Civil War

A collection of poems written in the late 19th century. This anthology curates a selection of songs and ballads that reflect the sentiments and experiences from various American conflicts, including the Colonial Wars, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812-15, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. The poems capture the profound emotions of war, from valor and sacrifice to longing and grief, encapsulating both patriotic fervor and poignant loss. The opening of this volume introduces an array of poems commemorating significant figures and moments from the Civil War. Each piece sets a somber yet reverent tone, reflecting on heroism, sacrifice, and the human cost of battle. For instance, ''Lyon'' praises a brave general, while ''My Maryland'' calls upon the author's home state in the throes of conflict. Other poems depict individual experiences, such as the last thoughts of a soldier in ''The Old Sergeant'' and the call for unity in ''Wanted - A Man.'' The lyrical quality of these works immerses readers in the historical context, evoking a deep sense of the past and the personal impact of war.
