Phillips drew on extensive plantation records to examine the mechanics of the slave trade, the labor regimes of Southern plantations, and the systems of control that maintained the institution. Yet the work has been devastatingly overtaken by subsequent scholarship. In the 1950s, Kenneth Stampp and others systematically dismantled Phillips's conclusions, showing that his portrait of slavery as a relatively benign system with contented enslaved people reflected the biases of his era more than historical evidence. Modern historians recognize this as a foundational but deeply flawed text: essential for understanding how American historiography grappled with its greatest moral wound, but not a reliable guide to what slavery actually was.
