America's War for Humanity

Written in the heat of 1918, when the war's outcome still hung in the balance, Thomas Herbert Russell offers an urgent, impassioned account of why America chose to abandon neutrality and take up arms. This isn't history from a safe distance - it's the voice of a witness to civilization's crisis. Russell traces the road from Europe's devastation to Woodrow Wilson's decision, painting Germany's militarism as an existential threat to democracy itself. The book marches through the political machinations, the sinking of merchant vessels, the Zimmermann Telegram, and the rising public outcry that made neutrality untenable. What emerges is a period piece that captures how Americans of 1918 understood their moment: not as imperialists, but as defenders of humanity. For readers interested in how the Great War looked to those living through it - before the disillusionment set in, before the lost generation found its voice - this provides an invaluable window into wartime psychology.
