All About Dogs: A Book for Doggy People

What happens when a true dog fanatic sits down to write for his fellow enthusiasts? Something rather wonderful, as it turns out. Charles Henry Lane's 1900 ode to canine companionship is less a dry reference manual and more a love letter to dogs in all their glorious variety. Lane draws on decades of hands-on experience with breeds ranging from agile terriers to dignified show dogs, sharing practical wisdom about their care, temperament, and the particular joys of each type. He examines the sporting breeds with particular enthusiasm, tracing how breeding practices shaped not just the dogs themselves but the economics and ethics of the era's outdoor culture. The book also serves as a charming time capsule, capturing a moment when the bond between humans and their dogs was being celebrated with renewed fervor. Whether you're curious about which breeds captured Edwardian hearts or simply want to hear an enthusiastic dog person rhapsodize about his favorites, this book offers a warm and wonderfully period-specific window into a love that has not changed in a hundred years.
