Albert Gallatin

He arrived in America as a young Swiss immigrant fleeing conservative Europe. He left as the longest-serving Secretary of the Treasury in American history, a man who shaped the nation's financial foundations for decades. Albert Gallatin's story is the story of early America itself: the ideological battles between Federalists and Democratic-Republicans, the clash with Alexander Hamilton over the soul of American finance, the Whiskey Rebellion's farmers, the War of 1812's chaos, and the delicate diplomacy of the Treaty of Gallatin. Stevens captures Gallatin's insistence on transparency and accountability in government, his advocacy against national debt and paper currency, and his pivotal role in creating the House Ways and Means Committee. Yet Gallatin was more than a financier. He founded New York University, cofounded the American Ethnological Society, and mastered languages from French to Cherokee. This late 19th-century biography illuminates an immigrant who helped define what America could become, proving that the republic's democratic ideals could be wielded by anyone willing to fight for them.
