Poetry

A young man stolen from his mountain home watches his father die, then is sold into bondage in ancient Babylon. Yet even as a slave, Akra refuses to surrender the thing they cannot take: his eye for beauty and his hand's ability to create it. Working as a craftsman in the shadow of the city's legendary walls, he is haunted by the memory of a queen whose face he glimpsed only once, and by the homeland that lives in his heart like a second pulse. The grandeur and brutality of Babylon become mirrors for his internal struggle, his dignity perpetually at war with his circumstances. This is not a story of triumphant escape but of something harder and more human: a man who finds meaning in the making, who chooses his own death rather than be broken, who creates one final act of beauty as the dawn arrives. Written in 1910, this poetic novel captures the ancient tension between freedom and the spirit that persists despite chains.
