Adventures in the Arts: Informal Chapters on Painters, Vaudeville, and Poets

Marsden Hartley was among the most perceptive artists of the American modernist movement, and this collection reveals why: he thought about art with the same fiery intensity he brought to painting it. Written in an intimate, conversational tone, these informal essays traverse an astonishing range, from close readings of fellow painters to the raucous energy of vaudeville to the cadences of contemporary poets. Hartley rejects detached criticism in favor of emotional truth, arguing that genuine engagement with art is itself a creative act. His celebrated piece on Native American ceremonial dance demonstrates his deep respect for indigenous artistic traditions, while his meditations on the relationship between artist and critic pulse with the conviction that questioning and feeling are not opposites but partners in the artistic life. These chapters capture a moment when American culture was inventing itself, and one of its most talented voices was paying fierce, personal attention.
