Biographies, History - American

This is California as few ever saw it: a land of adobes and open ranges, where Bunker Hill marked the edge of town and the sound of sheep bells filled the valleys. Sarah Bixby Smith arrived in Los Angeles in 1878, a seven-year-old from the San Justo Rancho, and spent her formative years in a place that still bore the rough beauty of the frontier. Her memoir captures the daily rhythms of ranch life with an intimacy that only comes from having truly lived it, from the wool-shearing rituals to the slow rhythms of a family that helped build California one decade at a time. But the book's beating heart is the story that exertes "a strong pull on the imagination" - the tale of how her father and two friends from Maine drove sheep and cattle across the entire continent in 1853, following trails that barely existed, through mountains and deserts that tested every limit of human endurance. This overland saga, paired with a mysterious prophecy about San Pedro Harbor, gives the memoir its unusual architecture: a child's intimate recollection of a vanishing world, shadowed by the epic journey that made that world possible. Smith became a leading citizen of California, and her account stands as an irreplaceable time capsule of a place in the moment before it became what we know now.
