Account of the Skeleton of the Mammoth: A Non-Descript Carnivorous Animal of Immense Size, Found in America

In 1802, America was still figuring out what to make of the enormous bones emerging from the earth. Rembrandt Peale, artist and naturalist, tackles one of the first great scientific mysteries of the young nation: what creature left these titanic remains scattered across New York and Kentucky? The answer he arrives at is magnificent and, by modern standards, wonderfully wrong. Peale argues this was no gentle giant but a fearsome carnivore of unimaginable size, a beast that once ruled American forests with teeth to match. This slim volume captures a pivotal moment when science was still inventing itself in America. Peale works with the sparse evidence available, comparing mammoth bones to elephants, hippos, and other known creatures, building a case that feels both rigorous and wildly speculative. The text crackles with the thrill of discovery, the frustration of incomplete fossils, and the audacity of a young nation's intellectuals daring to explain the ancient dead beneath their feet.
