A Woman Rice Planter

A Woman Rice Planter, published in 1913 by Elizabeth W. Allston Pringle, chronicles the life of Patience Pennington, a woman managing a rice plantation in South Carolina after the Civil War. The narrative provides insights into plantation life, the socio-cultural dynamics of the time, and the struggles of a woman in a male-dominated society. Pringle, drawing from her own experiences on an antebellum plantation, highlights her commitment to empowering her workers, many of whom are former slaves, while navigating challenges such as natural disasters and labor management. This work is significant for its contributions to women's history and its portrayal of Southern life in a tumultuous era.
