A Turkish Woman's European Impressions
1913

In the early 1900s, a Turkish woman escapes the gilded cage of an Ottoman harem and finds herself in the streets of Paris, London, and beyond. Zeynep Hanım was unlike any traveler her nation had produced: she spoke six languages, played piano and ud, engaged Rodin in conversation, debated British parliamentarians, and moved through European intellectual circles with startling ease. Yet beneath this sophistication lies a woman who fled secrecy and fear for the sake of breath itself. Her memoir, drawn from letters to Scottish feminist journalist Grace Ellison, chronicles not merely sightseeing but a profound reckoning with freedom: what it costs, what it demands, and how strange it feels when you've never known it. She writes of open windows in Europe after a lifetime of closed doors, of the terror that accompanies liberation, and of her daring escape from secret police who pursued her across continents. This is a document of immense historical significance, one of the first voices from the Islamic world to speak directly to Western feminism, but it is also a deeply human story of a woman learning to exist in her own skin.
