A Thousand Years of Jewish History: From the Days of Alexander the Great to the Moslem Conquest of Spain

A sweeping journey through a millennium that defined Judaism itself. Maurice H. Harris traces the Jewish people from the aftermath of the Babylonian exile through the conquests of Alexander the Great, the turbulence of Roman occupation, and the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, culminating on the eve of the Muslim conquest of Spain. This is the missing millennium, the period often overlooked between the Hebrew Bible and Rabbinic literature, where Temple worship gave way to the synagogue, where oral tradition crystallized into the Talmud, and where Jewish identity was forged under Persian, Greek, and Roman rule. Harris illuminates the transformative figures of Ezra and Nehemiah, the Maccabean revolt against Hellenization, and the intellectual currents that would shape Jewish life for centuries to come. Written in the early twentieth century with scholarly rigor but accessible prose, this volume remains a vital introduction to how a displaced people preserved their faith, law, and community through some of history's most powerful empires.
