A Tale of the Summer Holidays

Five Danvers children gather in a summer house at the dawn of their holidays, and something is already shifting. The secret meeting that Drusie has convened should be兴奋ing - they've planned their annual double birthday battle, the mock war that defines their summers. But Hal, her twin, has changed. School has given him new friends, new attitudes, and the younger children can sense him pulling away. This is the hinge moment of childhood: the last summer when the bonds of sibling loyalty might still hold, before growing up rewrites everything. Mockler writes with tender precision about the small heartbreaks of childhood - the fear that someone you love will find better friends, the fierce loyalty that masks insecurity, the imaginative worlds children build to keep the adult world at bay. The double birthday battle becomes something more than a game: it's a last stand against the changes no one can stop.
