A Survivor's Recollections of the Whitman Massacre

Matilda Sager

Biographies, History - American

In 1844, a family of eleven set out from Missouri for Oregon Territory. By the time they reached the Whitman Mission at Waillatpu, both parents were dead, and their children had been taken in by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. Matilda Sager was nine years old. Two years later, she witnessed the massacre that would become one of the most notorious episodes in Pacific Northwest history: the November 29, 1847 attack that killed the Whitmans and eleven others. This is her account, written from the vantage of decades later, of crossing the plains as a child, losing her parents to the journey's brutalities, finding temporary haven with the missionaries, and surviving when so many did not. But this is not merely a document of tragedy. Matilda went on to marry at sixteen, raise a large family, lose three husbands, and become a noted pioneer of Washington Territory. Her memoir, published posthumously, offers an unflinching child's-eye view of the Oregon Trail's human cost and the violence that marked the collision of cultures in the Pacific Northwest. It endures because it refuses to simplify: here is grief without melodrama, survival without triumphalism, and a voice from 1847 that still speaks across the centuries.
