A Source Book for Ancient Church History

Here is the raw material of early Christianity, unsimplified and unspun. This compilation gathers the actual documents that testify to how a small Jewish sect became the Roman Empire's official religion: the letters of Ignatius written during his journey to martyrdom, Eusebius's careful chronicle of persecution and survival, the records of councils where theologians fought over the nature of Christ. Ayer organizes these sources around two defining transformations: the Church under Roman persecution, when believers faced lions for their faith, and the Church after Constantine, when Christianity became a political power. The book covers the Apostolic Age through the sixth century, providing not interpretation but evidence. Students and serious readers will find here what standard textbooks obscure: the messiness, the debates, the blood. This is a teaching resource, not a narrative, but it remains one of the few accessible collections of primary sources for this foundational period in Western civilization.
