A Soldier's Life on the Western Frontier in 1813

This is a soldier's letter home from the War of 1812, and it reads like it could have been written yesterday. An anonymous enlisted man on the western frontier puts pen to paper to describe the grinding reality of military life in what was then America's far northwest: the brutal cold, the meager rations, the endless tedium punctuated by flashes of genuine danger. He writes about his companions, the strange mix of resentment and loyalty that forms between men forced together by duty. He writes about home, about what he misses, about the small dignities that keep a person human when the world has reduced them to a uniform and a rank. Originally published in the early 19th-century Weekly Register, the letter is striking for how little time has eroded its emotional core. The specific details are period-specific, but the feelings are eternal. This is not glorification or propaganda. It is one man trying to explain his life to someone who might understand it.
