A School History of the Great War

Written in 1919 when the guns had barely fallen silent, this textbook captures something rare: America's first attempt to explain an incomprehensible war to its children. Albert E. McKinley crafted this volume for seventh and eighth graders, weaving together the political ambitions, nationalist fervor, and imperial rivalries that pulled Europe into catastrophe. It stands as a remarkable time capsule of how Americans processed the war's causes while the smoke was still clearing, intended not for historians but for young minds encountering the conflict as it happened. The book traces the prewar landscape, the rise of competing powers, and the systems of alliance that made a continental explosion inevitable. Reading it now reveals as much about American education and national memory as it does about the war itself.
