A Sailor of King George

The young Frederick Hoffman embraces his mother one last time before joining H.M.S. Blonde. He is seventeen, bound for a war that will define a generation, and he has no idea what waits in the wind-scoured waters off the coast of France. Within days, he is learning to reef sails in howling storms, to stand watch through moonless nights while enemy frigates prowl the darkness, to laugh at death with boys who became brothers before the guns fell silent. These journals capture what no battle narrative can: the texture of ordinary days aboard a British man-of-war. The mind-numbing boredom punctuated by moments of exquisite terror. The strange friendships formed in shared hardship. The food, the filth, the fear, the black humor that kept men sane. Hoffman writes with the clear eye of someone who observed everything, from the admiral on the quarterdeck to the powder boys tumbling in the scuppers. Two centuries later, his words still possess the power to transport readers belowdecks, to make them smell the tar and taste the salt, to feel what it meant to be a boy in a violent world, serving a king he would never meet.
