A Royal Son and Mother

A mother watches her son abandon privilege for the wilderness of colonial America, and in his sacrifice, finds her own redemption. This early 20th-century biography tells the extraordinary story of Prince Demetrius Gallitzin, born into Russian nobility, who converted to Catholicism and devoted his life to serving frontier parishes in Pennsylvania's rugged Allegheny Mountains. His mother, the German-born Princess Amalie von Schmettau, emerges as the quiet architect of this spiritual transformation, a woman who renounced the glittering courts of Europe to follow her son into poverty and obscurity, founding schools and tending to the spiritual needs of German and Irish immigrants alike. Von Hügel's portrait captures something vanished from modern letters: the particular grace of a mother-son bond forged in shared faith and mutual sacrifice. The book breathes with the dust of early American Catholicism, rendering visible the invisible labor of those who built churches in the backcountry while the Enlightenment swept through Europe's capitals. For readers drawn to hidden histories, forgotten saints, and the private economies of devotion that shape public lives.
