A Relic of the Revolution

Charles Herbert

Biographies, History - American, History - British, History - Warfare

In the summer of 1776, the brig Dolton was seized by a British warship, and her crew faced a fate far worse than death: years of captivity in the prisons of Plymouth, England. Charles Herbert was twenty-two years old when he found himself chained in the cable-tier of a British ship, watching his fellow prisoners succumb to disease, despair, and brutal treatment. This is his account, written nearly eight decades later but searing with the vivid memory of starvation, overcrowding, and the particular anguish of being forgotten so far from home. We follow Herbert through the grinding tedium and acute suffering of three years in captivity, the deaths of shipmates like Edwin Hunt, and the small acts of resistance and humanity that kept men alive. This is not romantic Revolutionary War history but its raw underside: what it meant to be an American sailor caught in the machinery of empire. For readers of primary historical accounts, of maritime narratives, of any story that examines what survival costs, Herbert's memoir stands as an unforgiving record of resilience tested past its limits.
