A Rebel's Recollections

A Rebel's Recollections, written by George Cary Eggleston and first published in 1875, offers a personal narrative of the Civil War from the perspective of a Southern soldier in Virginia. The memoir captures the complexities of Southern patriotism, detailing the initial reluctance to secede, the spirited yet disorganized nature of volunteer soldiers, and the emotional struggles surrounding honor and duty. Eggleston's work became popular for its nostalgic and often humorous portrayal of life during the war, reflecting a desire to reconcile the past and glorify the soldiers of both the Confederacy and the Union.
