A Prairie Infanta

In a wind-scoured Colorado mining town, a young girl named Lola survives the aftermath of her mother's death, left in the care of Jane Combs, a woman whose stiff compassion cannot fill the absence of blood or belonging. Lola carries her mother's Spanish heritage like a secret language in a place where difference marks you as outsider. Brodhead, writing with sharp, unsentimental precision, traces Lola's slow awakening to the loneliness of being neither fully American nor fully Mexican, caught in the gap between what she remembers and what this harsh landscape demands she become. The prose has the clarity of mountain air: cold, clean, stripped of excess. This is a novel about the violence of assimilation, the grief that goes unnamed, and the particular ache of childhood in a world that refuses to see you. It endures because it was telling this story when almost no one else was.
