A New Selection of Miscellaneous Pieces, in Verse

In 1821, a blind woman in rural Scotland picked up her pen and wrote poems that would outlast her. Christian Gray's collection gathers verses born from a life marked by darkness, yet never dimmed by it. These are not grand meditations but intimate whispers: thank-you notes to benefactors, lullabies for children, elegies for friends lost to illness, and quiet observations of the Highland seasons that surrounded her but she could never see. Gray translates Ossian's ancient fragments and replies to popular songs of her day, weaving her voice into the cultural conversation of early nineteenth-century Britain. Yet the collection's power lies in its specificity. When she writes of her own frailty, her dependence on others, her unwavering Christian faith amid suffering, she transforms personal circumstance into something universal. This is poetry without pretension, where a blind woman's gratitude becomes a meditation on receiving and giving light. For readers seeking voices from the margins of literary history, or anyone who believes that limited vision can reveal more than plenty, Gray offers stubborn, gentle hope.
