A New Illustrated Edition of J. S. Rarey's Art of Taming Horses: With the Substance of the Lectures at the Round House, and Additional Chapters on Horsemanship and Hunting, for the Young and Timid

In an era when horse-breaking meant dominance through fear and pain, J.S. Rarey arrived with a radical proposition: what if understanding the animal's mind mattered more than breaking its spirit? This 1850s manual documents Rarey's transformation from rough rider to revolutionary horseman, and his lectures at the Round House where he taught a generation of timid equestrians that true mastery comes from patience, not force. The book details his counterintuitive methods: gain a horse's trust first, read its nature, work with instinct rather than against it. Rarey believed any horse could become docile and obedient without the whip, a heretical notion that made his lectures the talk of the equestrian world. Whether you're a nervous beginner terrified of a thousand-pound animal or a curious reader interested in the history of animal behavior, this book offers something rare: a 19th-century text that still challenges our assumptions about how we relate to creatures large enough to kill us.
