John Tanner

Language & Linguistics, History

In 1789, a nine-year-old boy named John Tanner was stolen from his Kentucky homestead by Ottawa raiders. He would not see white settlers again for nearly three decades. This 1830 narrative documents one of the most extraordinary cases of cultural displacement in American history: a white child absorbed into Ojibway society, becoming a hunter and warrior, forgetting his English, and eventually marrying into the tribe. When American forces eventually 'recovered' him, Tanner found himself as alien among his own people as he had been among the Indians. The narrative follows his struggle to reconstruct an identity between two worlds that no longer fit. It's a document of immense historical value, one of the earliest captivity narratives published in America, but also a haunting meditation on what identity means when belonging itself has been taken. The prose is plain, direct, occasionally savage, sometimes beautiful. Essential reading for anyone interested in the early American frontier, Native American history, or the question of what it means to come home to a place that no longer recognizes you.
