A Mother's List of Books for Children

A mother's curated guide to children's literature from 1865, this list reveals what one thoughtful Victorian parent believed every child should read. Gertrude Weld Arnold organized her recommendations by age rather than school grade, recognizing that young readers develop at their own pace. The selection reflects a world of fairy tales, moral tales, and adventure stories that shaped generations of children. Some titles have become beloved classics still read today, while others have faded into charming obscurity, replaced by newer treasures. Arnold's preface is particularly endearing: she acknowledges fellow librarians, reflects on how literary tastes shift over time, and expresses hope that her work will bring 'joy and enlightenment' to families. This isn't a dry catalog but a window into what Victorians valued in children's books: kindness, humor, imagination, and stories that rewarded virtue. For anyone curious about the history of childhood, or how our grandparents' grandparents learned to love reading.
