A Minor War History Compiled from a Soldier Boy's Letters to "the Girl I Left…

In 1861, a young New Hampshire soldier began writing to his sweetheart back home. These aren't dispatches or official reports - they're the unguarded letters of a young man grappling with homesickness, fear, and the grinding tedium of war. Martin Haynes wrote to Cornelia Lane about everything: the muddy camps, the friends who fell, the small moments of beauty between battles, and the ache of being separated from the girl he loved. His words capture what official histories never can: the inner life of a soldier, the human cost of conflict told through one person's private voice. The letters span the war's full arc, from early optimism to its brutal conclusion, offering an intimate window into how a young man's perspective shifted over years of conflict. What makes this collection endure is its unfiltered honesty - there's no postwar revision, no heroic posturing, just the raw and real correspondence of someone trying to survive a war while holding onto love.
