A Man of the Moors

Set against the wind-scoured Yorkshire moors where Halliwell Sutcliffe spent his days, this is a novel about a woman trapped by love and geography. Kate Strangeways, fine-boned and spiritually sensitive, married Joe the quarryman a man whose roughness is matched only by his capacity for cruelty. He drinks weekly. He beats her. And yet she stays, searching for some redeemable spark in the man she chose over her family's protests. The moors themselves become a character here: vast, indifferent, ancient, watching over Marshcotes village and the abandoned Peewit House where once the old squireens held wild courts. Sutcliffe writes with the stark beauty of Brontë country, capturing a world where survival means endurance, where love is tangled with degradation, and where the line between victim and volunteer blurs in the space between two hills. This is not a comfortable novel. It is a honest one about what women endured, what they tolerated, and what they could not escape.
