A Little House in War Time

The most striking thing about this collection is its immediacy. Egerton and Agnes Castle wrote these stories in 1914, as the Great War was just beginning, capturing a world that had not yet learned to call it "the Great" or to understand what it would become. The Villino, a small English house, becomes a prism through which we see war arrive not with fanfare but with telegrams, absences, and the slow poisoning of ordinary life. The Castles offer no battlefield heroics. Instead, they render the domestic catastrophe: a mother reading casualty lists, a garden going to seed, the terrible quiet of a house where someone used to be. Yet the collection refuses mere gloom. There is a stubborn English romanticism here, a belief that teacups and gardens and small dignities matter even when everything trembles. Written while the bombs were still falling, this is one of the earliest literary responses to industrial war, and it endures because it shows us how people actually lived through that first bewildering year, not how we've remembered it since.
