A Little Hero

An eight-year-old boy is torn from his mother's arms in India and sent alone across the world to England. This is Jeff's story, and it aches with the particular loneliness of a child who has lost everything familiar. Separated from his devoted mother and thrust into the cold household of distant relatives, Jeff finds no warmth, no comfort, only the manipulative cruelty of his cousin Brian. The adults are indifferent; the other children are hostile. What does a boy do when the world has forgotten to be kind? But Jeff is not made of weakness. When Brian's life hangs in the balance, Jeff must choose: will he walk away, as the world has walked away from him? Or will he prove that courage isn't the absence of fear, but the choice to act anyway? Written in 1887, A Little Hero captures something true about childhood resilience, about the heroic nature of small acts, and about the bonds that endure across oceans. It endures because it understands that heroism isn't about grand gestures. It's about what we do when no one is watching, and when everyone has forgotten us.
