A List of Kegan Paul, Trench & Co.'S Publications (1887)

This is not a novel. It is a window. Published in 1887, this catalog lists every book Kegan Paul, Trench & Co. deemed worthy of printing that year: poetry and philosophy, military history and scientific treatises, educational primers and literary criticism. Browse its pages and you find what educated Victorians were reading, what subjects their publishers considered profitable and respectable, and which authors had earned a place in the growing libraries of the expanding middle class. The catalog is organized by category, each section a small museum of the era's intellectual preoccupations. Military strategy sits beside Darwinian science. Poetry volumes share shelf space with religious meditations. It is a compressed portrait of a civilization ordering its knowledge. For historians of the book, Victorian scholars, or anyone curious about what populated the shelves of 1887, this list is a primary source. It tells you not just what was published, but what was valued.
