A List of English & American Sequel Stories

Before databases, before the internet, before anyone could simply Google "Sherlock Holmes sequels," there was Thomas Aldred's meticulously compiled list. Published in the early 20th century, this reference work catalogs every English and American sequel, series, and continuing character Aldred could track down, from trilogies to ongoing narratives spanning dozens of volumes. It's a love letter to the era when series fiction was exploding, capturing the sprawling literary landscape before modern bibliographic tools existed. Aldred includes stories with recurring characters, continuous narratives, and connected trilogies, drawing from sources he admits were sometimes questionable. The result is an invaluable time capsule: a scholar's earnest attempt to map the untidy, glorious sprawl of early sequel culture. For anyone researching the history of series fiction, tracking down Victorian and Edwardian continua, or simply marveling at the sheer ambition of literary continuity, this list is a portal into a lost age of endless stories.
