History - Early Modern (c. 1450-1750), Religion/Spirituality
A Letter from the Lord Bishop of London, to the Clergy and People of London and Westminster, written by Thomas Sherlock in 1750, is a religious treatise addressing the moral and spiritual implications of recent earthquakes. Sherlock uses these natural disasters as a metaphor for societal wickedness, urging repentance and a return to faith among the clergy and laity. The text emphasizes personal responsibility in combating moral decay and warns of divine judgment while offering hope for God's grace to those seeking genuine repentance.
