A History of Tithes

Tithes were once the most contentious tax in England. For centuries, the obligation to give one-tenth of one's produce to the church shaped rural life, sparked riots, and forced peasants into creative forms of resistance. This 1891 study traces that explosive history from biblical precedent through the early Christian church, examining how a voluntary act of devotion became a compulsory levy enforced by ecclesiastical law. Clarke, drawing extensively on the scholarship of John Selden and others, meticulously examines the documentary record, exposing contradictions in earlier accounts and the fierce debates surrounding the origins and imposition of tithes. The work moves from pre-Christian biblical references through the evolution of ecclesiastical authority, culminating in a granular analysis of 19th-century Welsh diocesan finances. This is history written at the granular level: ledger books, land valuations, and the complex machinery of church revenue. For anyone interested in the deep roots of church-state relations, the economics of religious institutions, or the long history of taxation as a site of conflict, Clarke's text remains a foundational work.
