A History of the United States

This 1903 textbook offers something rare: a window into how Americans once understood their own origins. Written by historian Charles Kendall Adams shortly before his death, it presents the nation's story as educated Americans at the dawn of the twentieth century saw it. The narrative spans from the indigenous peoples who first inhabited the continent through the closing of the frontier and America's emergence as a world power. Adams and co-author William P. Trent aim for balance, giving voice to Southern perspectives on the Civil War and acknowledging the complex role of Western territories in national growth. Reading this book is less like consulting a modern reference and more like sitting in a university lecture hall in 1903, hearing Americans make sense of their own past. It captures a moment when the frontier had just closed, the trauma of Civil War remained fresh, and the country stood at the threshold of global power. For readers interested in how historical narratives are constructed and evolve, this volume serves as a fascinating time capsule of American historiography at a pivotal moment.
