A History of the Third French Republic

The dramatic birth of modern France emerges from catastrophe and contradiction in this rigorous early 20th-century account. Following the crushing defeat of Napoleon III at Sedan and the siege of Paris, France faced annihilation as a great power. Yet from the ashes of imperial failure rose the Third Republic, a government nobody wanted but everyone would fight to preserve for seventy years. Wright traces the political maneuvering that led to the Franco-Prussian War, the embarrassing military collapse, and the extraordinary circumstances that forced monarchists, republicans, and bonapartists to improvise a republic none of them truly desired. The narrative illuminates how nationalism, imperialism, and internal strife reshaped French governance through debates that still echo today. For anyone seeking to understand the making of modern France, this text provides essential context for the political culture that produced de Gaulle, the Resistance, and France's enduring place in European affairs.
