A History of the Republican Party

A vivid, early 20th-century account of how the Republican Party erupted from the fires of American slavery to reshape a nation. Platt traces the party's origins to the moral and political crisis of the 1850s, when the expansion of slavery into new territories sparked the formation of an unlikely coalition abolitionists, free-soilers, and former Whigs united by a shared conviction that the 'twin relic of barbarism' must be contained. The narrative moves through the dramatic years leading to Lincoln's ascension, the Civil War's transformative impact, and the party's evolution into a dominant political force. Written with the immediacy of someone who lived through the aftermath of these events, this book captures not just the political maneuvering but the ideological fervor that drove a young party to remake American politics.
