A History of Spain: Founded on the Historia De España Y De La Civilización Española of Rafael Altamira

Spain is a country made by its mountains. The meseta, that vast central plateau, rises like a fortress between the sea and the world, and from this geography springs a history unlike any other in Europe: a story of repeated conquest, of civilizations crashing against one another across millennia. Chapman, drawing on the monumental work of Rafael Altamira, traces this epic sweep from the pre-Roman peoples of the Iberian coast through the Phoenician, Greek, and Carthaginian settlements, the long centuries of Roman dominion, the violent upheaval of the Germanic kingdoms, and the arrival of the Umayyads in 711. What follows is the extraordinary drama of Al-Andalus, the Islamic civilization that flourished for centuries in the shadow of the Cross, and the slow, grinding Reconquista by the Christian kingdoms of the north. The book builds toward 1492, that hinge year when the fall of Granada, the expulsion of the Jews, and Columbus's voyage to the Americas transformed Spain forever and seeded the modern Americas with Spanish institutions, language, and culture. Chapman writes with the conviction that understanding Spain is essential to understanding America, and his narrative, while academic in provenance, carries the vivid particularity of a scholar who knows his terrain. This is not a brief summary but a considered distillation of Spanish civilization for readers who want to grasp how a peninsula became a world empire.
