A History of Horncastle, from the Earliest Period to the Present Time

A town reveals itself through the eyes of someone who loved it for thirty years. J. Conway Walter spent three decades accumulating local records, chronicles, and oral traditions before committing them to print in 1908, and the result is neither dry catalog nor distant academia. It is something rarer: a man's attempt to hold his entire world in prose, from the prehistoric settlements that first drew humans to this Lincolnshire valley through the Romans, Saxons, and Normans who each left their mark on its streets. He traces place names to their roots, resurrects forgotten local figures, and catalogs the slow accumulation of governance and institution that transformed a settlement into a community. Reading it now feels like stepping into an Edwardian gentleman's study, where the very act of documentation was an act of devotion. For anyone curious about how a specific place becomes a home, or how one person's archive becomes another's treasure, this remains an extraordinary artifact of local love.
