A History of Greek Art: With an Introductory Chapter on Art in Egypt and Mesopotamia

A remarkable journey across the ancient Mediterranean, this 1896 study asks a question many visitors to museums still wonder: where did Greek art come from? The opening chapter traces the artistic heritage that Greece inherited: the monumental stone architecture of Egypt, the glazed brick reliefs of Babylon, the severe beauty of Mesopotamian sculpture. Tarbell shows how Greek artists absorbed these eastern traditions then transformed them into something unmistakably their own, marrying eastern techniques with a new devotion to human form and proportional harmony. The book doesn't merely catalog monuments; it asks what makes Greek art different, and finds the answer in a culture that elevated the human body and the quest for ideal proportion to sacred status.Written when classical archaeology was still a young discipline, Tarbell writes with the enthusiasm of a scholar who knew these objects firsthand, who could still feel the shock of standing before a Parthenon frieze or an Egyptian temple column. For readers who want to understand not just what Greek art is, but why it matters and how it came to be, this remains a valuable and surprisingly readable introduction.
