A History of English Versification

This is a foundational work in the study of English poetic form. Schipper approaches verse not as mere ornament but as a precise science, one governed by measurable laws of rhythm, accent, and structural arrangement. Written in the early twentieth century, the text traces the evolution of English versification from its Anglo-Saxon roots through the Renaissance and into the modern era, examining how changing linguistic patterns reshaped the possibilities of poetic sound. The work is rigorous, analytically sharp, and grounded in the belief that understanding how a poem is built is essential to understanding what it means. Schipper distinguishes between prose and poetry through systematic examination of metre and stanzaic form, making this an essential resource for anyone who wants to read English poetry with deeper precision. Whether you are a student, a poet, or a literary scholar, this book offers the tools to hear what is actually happening in the lines.
