A History of Canada, 1763-1812

This is the story of how Canada became Canada. Beginning with the Treaty of Paris in 1763, when France ceded its North American empire to Britain, Lucas traces five decades of extraordinary transformation. The reader is plunged into a world where British officials struggled to govern a conquered people who outnumbered them ten to one, where Indigenous nations wielded real political power as allies and adversaries, and where the American Revolution next door threatened to redraw the entire map. Lucas brings keen analytical attention to the Proclamation of 1763, the Quebec Act, and the explosive resistance of Pontiac's War, showing how each decision planted seeds of the Canada that would emerge. The narrative builds toward the War of 1812, when the young nation's survival hung in the balance and the question of whether British North America would endure as a distinct country was finally answered. Written in 1909 with scholarly rigor and an elegant clarity now rare, this remains a vital introduction to the critical decades when Canada forged its identity between empire and republic.
