A History of Bohemian Literature

Francis Lützow, writing in 1907 as the Austro-Hungarian Empire entered its final decade, tells the story of Czech literature's long struggle to survive and flourish under foreign rule. He traces how a people systematically stripped of political independence used language and storytelling to preserve their collective soul. The book opens with the controversial Manuscript of Königinhof, that disputed medieval text whose authenticity was fiercely debated, and moves through centuries of suppression that nearly erased Czech literary production entirely. The 19th century comes alive here as the National Revival, that remarkable period when writers and poets became the unexpected architects of a nation refusing to disappear. Lützow writes not as a distant academic but as a son of Bohemia, acutely aware that literature in his homeland was never merely aesthetic. It was existential. This book captures a pivotal historical moment, just before the Empire's collapse, when the questions it raises about language, authenticity, and national identity were about to become violently urgent.
