A Girl's Life in Virginia Before the War

A Girl's Life in Virginia Before the War, written by Letitia M. Burwell in the late 19th century, is a historical account of her childhood on a Virginia plantation before the Civil War. The narrative provides a unique perspective on antebellum life, detailing the relationships between the white families and the enslaved individuals on the estate. Burwell's account reflects both the privileges of plantation life and the complexities of the social dynamics, offering insight into a society marked by underlying tensions and contradictions. This work serves as a counter-narrative to Northern depictions of slavery during that era.
