A Girl Among the Anarchists

In 1890s London, two young women from one of England's most famous artistic families did something unthinkable: they became editors of The Torch, a radical anarchist journal. This memoir, published under the pseudonym Isabel Meredith, is their audacious account of that double life. The narrator, raised by a progressive father who rejected conventional schooling, traces her evolution from restless, isolated girl to a woman who deliberately immerses herself in the clandestine world of anarchist meetings, underground printing operations, and revolutionary politics. She introduces us to a cast of magnetic, dangerous figures: the enigmatic Kosinski, the charismatic Nekrovitch, and dozens of other dreamers, fighters, and frauds who populated London's radical underground. But this is more than political adventure. It's a coming-of-age story about a woman trying to escape her class, interrogate her privileges, and find genuine purpose in a world that offered women few legitimate paths to power. The prose fizzes with youthful defiance and dark humor, making this both a valuable historical document and an unexpectedly compelling read.
