A German Deserter's War Experience

A German Deserter's War Experience, written in the early 20th century by an anonymous author, recounts the harrowing experiences of a young German soldier during World War I. The narrative details his reluctant entry into combat, the brutal realities of trench warfare, and the moral dilemmas faced by soldiers, particularly during the infamous Christmas truce of 1914. This memoir, published by the allied press after the author's desertion to neutral Holland, provides a critical perspective on militarism and the devastating impact of war on both soldiers and civilians. The English translation is edited and introduced by historian Bob Carruthers.
