A Garden of Girls; Or, Famous Schoolgirls of Former Days

This book tells the stories of remarkable girls who learned across the centuries. From the early medieval schools of Ireland where young Darlugdacha studied beneath St. Brigid's guidance, to the Renaissance courts where Cecilia Gonzaga mastered music and philosophy, Concannon assembles a constellation of educated girls whose achievements defied their eras. The Middle Ages reveal St. Elizabeth, whose faith and learning shaped generations. What emerges is not mere nostalgia but a quietly radical proposition: that girls have always sought knowledge, always excelled, always been more than their eras allowed them to be. Written in the early 20th century with scholarly affection, this collection rescues these figures from historical obscurity and presents them as proof that the story of education is not exclusively male. For readers fascinated by women's history, the evolution of schooling, or simply the pleasure of meeting extraordinary young women who lived and learned before us.
