A Fundação Da Monarchia Portugueza: Narração Anti-Iberica
António Augusto Teixeira de Vasconcelos
A passionate 19th-century defence of Portugal's existence as a nation, written in the era of romantic nationalism when Europeans were rediscovering their tribal roots. Teixeira de Vasconcelos constructs a vivid account of how Portugal clawled its way out of Leonese vassalage to become a sovereign kingdom under D. Afonso Henriques in the 12th century. But this is not neutral scholarship it is polemic, explicitly framed as "Anti-Iberian" to argue that Portugal has always been distinct from, and hostile to, its Spanish neighbours. The author believed Portuguese nationality itself was under threat and wrote to remind his contemporaries that their ancestors had bled for independence. The narrative pulses with outrage at foreign domination and reverence for the warriors who forged a nation from the rocky western edge of Europe. Though dated in its historiography, the book remains a vital primary document of Portuguese self-mythology, revealing how a people choose to remember their birth.
