A Dissertation on Horses: Wherein It is Demonstrated, by Matters of Fact, as Well as from the Principles of Philosophy, That Innate Qualities Do Not Exist, and That the Excellence of This Animal is Altogether Mechanical and Not in the Blood
1756
In 1756, a veterinarian named William Osmer did something audacious: he told the English horse racing establishment that everything they believed about bloodlines was superstition. This dense, impassioned dissertation argues that a horse's excellence comes from its mechanical construction, its proportions, its bones and muscles, not from some mystical inheritance from noble ancestors. Osmer dissects the mythology of 'the blood' with the precision of a man who has spent his life actually looking at horses, not just reading pedigrees. He draws on ancient examples, from nomadic tribes to classical antiquity, to undermine the sacred cows of English breeding. Osmer names horses, traces lineages, and systematically dismantles the faith that a great sire must produce great offspring simply because of reputation. He wants breeders to become students of anatomy and mechanics, to trust what they can see and measure rather than what they have been told. The book is a polemic wrapped in philosophy, a call for rational observation in an industry ruled by mythology. For anyone interested in the history of empirical thinking, or the roots of modern breeding science, this is a fascinating artifact of intellectual rebellion.
