A Day at Camp Killkare; Or, Aunt Jane and the Campfire Girls

Aunt Jane arrives at Camp Killkare with her niece Lucille, armed with parasol, prejudices, and the firm conviction that young ladies should never get mud on their petticoats. She expects a refined outing. She finds a tent, a hammock, and thirty giggling Campfire Girls led by the cheerful Miss Morgan, all eager to transform their prim visitor into a nature enthusiast. What follows is a day of gentle chaos: swimming drills that send Aunt Jane fleeing from the water, campfire cooking that produces more smoke than sustenance, and any number of camp chores that threaten her delicate sensibilities. The girls, perpetually optimistic, keep coaxing her deeper into the wilderness. By Act's end, something remarkable happens. The woman who declared camping 'simply barbaric' begins to soften, to laugh, perhaps even to roast a marshmallow without wincing. This early 20th-century comedy captures a specific American moment: when the countryside promised liberation from Victorian rigidity, and even the most stubborn chaperone could learn to loosen her stays. For readers who enjoy gentle period humor and the simple pleasure of watching a stiff character come undone.
